Deiter Rams mastered the art of the user interface in the 1960s and 1970s, decades before the Internet would emerge as a mainstream tool for communications and commerce. He is widely considered by many to be among the greatest industrial designers. As I stare at a blank document, searching for ways in which I can deliver this message, I am reminded how elusive inspiration can be. Part of the reason that inspiration often eludes us is that there is no one reliable path to it, and many of our best ideas come to us when we least expect them, and frequently from unlikely sources. This creates obvious problems for those of us that make our living generating ideas. After all, we cannot simply shelve our projects and move on with life. The project is our life. more
